NYC Child Care Center
Queens, NY (1996 - 1998)
Architrope and James Harb Architects
This $3.6 million, 15,000 s.f. child care facility was designed for the NYC Department of Design and Construction. Within the L-shaped building, six classrooms are oriented to the south-facing playground, with the balance of the program filling out the urban edge. The steel-frame building features a glazed brick exterior in a checkerboard pattern, curtain wall glazing at the classrooms, and a steel cage ballcourt on the roof. The figure of the frame which cascades down from the roof acts to connect the two playgrounds. The project recieved a 1996 Award for Excellence in Design from the NYC Art Commission.
