Farmhouse Renovation
Pianello V.T., Italy (1977-1983)
The renovation and addition to this 400-year-old abandoned farmhouse in the Emilia Romagna region took place over a seven year period, with myself as client, architect, and mason's apprentice. The work comprised the gut renovation of the existing stone shell, new double-height studio, loft bedroom, the addition of a new bath complex with terrace above, dining terrace with mural, and addition of a gateway and stair to the raised garden. The development of this garden as an 'outdoor room' incorporates an existing rubble wall along which runs a new stair to the terrace above. Summer performances for the neighboring farmers take place in the garden, with the dining terrace utilized as stage.
